Basketball, Baylor, and Blogging!! Making history and making memories!

Guess what?!!!

TONIGHT...

The Lady Bears Won the National Championship!!

The mark of a successful season of Baylor Basketball...
as far as I'm concerned...
is recognizing I am exhausted...

from the week after week adrenaline rush
of game fever...
and get togethers with great friends to anticipate...
and celebrate...

VICTORY!!

First of all, the Baylor Men had a fantastic season...
Making it into the Elite 8 was a challenge and a thrill and so fun to watch!

But, the Lady Bears made it all the way!
And, made Waco proud!

What a very special season for Coach Kim Mulkey
and our superstar post, Brittney Griner!

This is the first time that I remember the national sports news stations
talking about a "female" athlete in a super-star status
kind of way!

Here is a pic of Brittney Griner slamming one down!

In my bias, Brittney has elevated the sport of women's basketball...

This is thrilling for a girl like me...
who grew up in Winter Haven, Florida...
where during my high school days...
the men's basketball team won the State Tournament!
(Not bad for a 4 - A school in Central Florida!)

BUT...

Sadly, we had NO women's basketball team...
We had virtually NO women's sports...
because
this was 1970-1974...
before America mandated equal funding
for women and men in sports.

After 1972 the law required schools
to spend equal amounts on girl sports as they did for guys!

So, I graduated in 1974 and, unfortunately, my generation
missed out on school sports for girls!

The fact that Brittney has brought magnanimous attention to women's basketball
and made it "COOL" to watch and root for women in sports...
is a really awesome thing from my perspective!

It feels a little like redemption...
righting a wrong...
equal rights at it's finest!

Congrats, Lady Bears!
Congrats, Baylor Naton!
Congrats, Women Athletes in America!

I am a soul singer who loves basketball and blogging!

  1. I have deemed this "The Year of the Bear." What fun it has been to be a Baylor fan.

  2. Sherry... It has been an incredible "Year of the Bear!" We've waited a long time for this excitement. Have you heard that Men's Baseball has won 21 straight games and the Equestrian team won the national championship?!!! The momentum keeps on rolling! Thanks for posting - I checked out your blog and loved your recipes...
